Why Data Science?

MichaelPage Talent Trends 2020-2021 finds : Data science professionals with 3-10 years of experience get annual salaries in the ₹25-65 lakh range, while those with more experience can command pay packages upwards of ₹1 crore. Experts with more than 15 years of experience can get paid up to ₹1.8 crore. The starting salary for data science professionals is 15-20% higher than other roles in engineering. When changing jobs, generally people demand 25-30% hike, but data scientists demand a 35-45% hike. The average annual pay hike for them falls between 20-30% compared with 15-20% for the rest of the employees.

The demand for data science professionals is at an all-time high, and the supply hasn’t been able to catch up, leading to an acute shortage of talent. As more and more companies move to the cloud, the need for data science and engineering talent will further increase. Rapid growth and demand in digital transformation and advanced analytics have led to a surge in demand for data science professionals in key technology areas such as artificial intelligence. The time taken to hire engineers in general is six-to-eight weeks, while the time to hire data scientists is 11-12 weeks.

40% of Analytics professionals in India have a work experience of less than 3 years. 61% Jobs are open for candidates with 0-5 years experience. The 2021 global estimate calls for 2.7 million job postings for analytics and data science roles. Indian data science industry is growing at a healthy rate of 33.5 per cent CAGR. India is projected to become one of the top five markets for Big Data by 2021.

Who is a Data Scientist?

A Data Scientist is someone who uses data to increase profit or influence a metric of interest. There are Four types of functional roles that a Data Scientist can perform. Canonically this is what a commercial data scientist is involved with:

  • Business Intelligence : Expressing data in effective visualizations to enable effective decision-making.

  • Data Analysis : Using data to explain why something happened in the past.

  • Data Analytic : Using data to predict what will happen in the future.

  • Data Engineering : Collecting, transforming, moving, securing and storing data to make the above three possible.
